Podgorica, Montenegro (8 October 2018) -- Prime Minister Duško Marković said that digitalisation is one of the most important preconditions for development and increase of competitiveness of economy and modern society, which has huge potential, stressing that Montenegro, with the support of the European Commission and within the Berlin Process, is actively working towards achieving the goals set out in the Digital Agenda for the Western Balkans.

"Significant progress has been made towards encouraging development of innovation, e-government development, broadband internet access, business digitalisation in the economy. This is the best investment in the future. One of the important aspects of the digital era, which I want to mention here is strengthening the capacity of cyber security, where we also cooperate with the member states of NATO and the EU," the Prime Minister told the press conference following today's meeting with European Commissioner for Digital Economy and Society Mariya Gabriel, who is visiting Montenegro on the occasion of holding a Western Balkan ministerial meeting on digital agenda.

Expressing satisfaction with her stay in Montenegro, the European Commissioner said that the digital agenda is of paramount importance for the countries of the Western Balkans, given the challenges the region is facing today. She called on the countries of the region to actively participate in the next Startup Summit, which will take place in Sofia next month.

Commissioner Gabriel said that she came to hear and exchange views and further strengthen digital collaboration. She congratulated Montenegro on being the first state to join the ISA2 programme on May 29 this year, adding this is a project that is important for ensuring better digital public services and cross-border interoperability.

European Commissioner for Digital Economy and Society reiterated that the the Digital Agenda for the Western Balkans was launched last year and that within the agenda there is an idea of ​​reducing roaming rates in the countries of the region.

The Digital Agenda for the Western Balkans is a comprehensive plan for improving the everyday lives of citizens. It aims to provide support to the Western Balkan region in order to perform its digital transformation. Montenegro plays this important role as one of the leaders of the process of joining the EU, European Commissioner for Digital Economy and Society Mariya Gabriel underscored after meeting with the Prime Minister of Montenegro.

Prime Minister Duško Marković said he is hopeful that the European Union will recognise the efforts made by Montenegro towards fulfilling the final benchmarks for closing negotiation chapter 10 - Information Society and Media.

"We believe that our European partners will decide in the forthcoming period that we are ready to open the remaining two chapters," Prime Minister Duško Marković concluded.
