Podgorica, Montenegro (21 September 2018) -- Prime Minister Duško Marković hosted earlier today the inaugural visit by Ambassador of Germany to Montenegro Robert Heinrich Weber.

Congratulating Ambassador Weber on his new duty, the Prime Minister reiterated his gratitude to Germany for its support for the country's EU bid and the process of integration into NATO.

"During the term of office of your predecessor, Ambassador Hans Günther Mattern, Montenegro became a NATO member. I believe that during your mandate, Montenegro will become a full member of the European Union," Prime Minister Marković said, reiterating that, after joining NATO, the accession to the EU remains the State's foreign policy priority.

Both sides pointed out that the whole region of the Western Balkans has a European perspective and that the only real and acceptable model of integration is the principle of regatta, i.e., the evaluation of each state according to its own results.

In that context, the Prime Minister stressed that the German support agreed last month in Berlin with Federal Chancellor Angela Merkel through concrete expert support to Montenegro in the area of the rule of law is a valuable assistance in one of the areas in which the country sees Germany and its standards as a role model.

Prime Minister Marković and Ambassador Weber agreed that last month's official visit of the Prime Minister to Germany and his official talks with the Federal Chancellor were very successful, showing that the two countries share views on key issues of importance for Europe and the Western Balkan region, thus setting a solid basis for further improvement of the economic cooperation between Montenegro and Germany.

The meeting also discussed topics related to the stability of the Western Balkans and Europe as a whole.
